THE GREEN TREE OR THE DRY TREE
(Luke 23:31) “For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?”
The environmentalists may take this verse literally. The religious group may interpret this verse in a literal sense, but the Word of God will stand firm in its truth. In the book of (Mark 11: 20- 21) 20- “And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21- And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.” The Lord Jesus Christ was in need of food when He came to a fig-tree. Although the fig tree was full of leaves, the Lord Jesus Christ hoped to find some fruit therein, but He found none. In spiritual sense, as children of God; we may not be as fruitful as Christ expected us to be…, but He would be disappointed to see us fruitless.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon has a different interpretation of the verse. He said, “If Christ the innocent Substitute for sinners, suffered as He did, what will be done when the sinners himself – the dry tree- falls into the hands of an angry God?” (Morning by Morning by Charles Haddon Spurgeon, page 107, April 08).
We know that the previous verses in Luke 23:31 was talking about the suffering of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Notice what Apostle Paul said regarding God the Father not sparing His own beloved Son- the Lord Jesus Christ. (Roman 8:32) “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”
